Notes from the Ridge: Discovering the Horizon

From city blocks to expansive horizons. A working study of atmosphere, light, and rural stillness.

Moving away from the dense visual rhythms of Melbourne’s CBD changes more than your routine. It fundamentally shifts how your eyes interact with light.

In the city, the sky is a fragmented canvas framed by concrete and glass corridors. It is something you look up at from a street corner. But out here in regional Victoria, the sky becomes the dominant architecture of the landscape.

This ongoing series is an intentional study in the pure gradients of colour that unfold on our doorsteps during those quiet, liminal windows of dawn and dusk. I am calling this body of work Horizon.

Embracing Atmospheric Stillness

There is a rare, honest geometry that occurs when a landscape is reduced to its barest elements. On mornings when the thick winter fog settles low across the fields, the world collapses into layers of soft gold and terracotta tones. The trees do not just stand in the landscape. They anchor it against the creeping mist.

On clear evenings, the transition is entirely cinematic. The sky shifts from deep lavender to soft pastel orange with absolute precision. In these frames, I am chasing that singular point where the land melts entirely into a smooth wall of color. The vast openness is broken only by a stark, graphic silhouette, such as a lone ridge tree or a distant roofline catching the last amber embers of daylight.

The Purist’s Approach

Like my previous work, these landscapes rely heavily on the patience of the field capture rather than the convenience of the editing suite. To capture the smooth, continuous tones of a natural gradient without digital artifacting or artificial enhancement requires waiting for nature to provide the perfect atmospheric diffusion.

There is an irreplaceable beauty in a raw, unmanipulated vista. It is a quiet reminder of what happens when we look beyond the peripheral noise of modern life and simply observe the sky.
